What is Implanon

The single-rod etonogestrel contraceptive implant is available in Australia as Implanon NXT. It is a long-acting (up to 3 years), reversible contraceptive method that is suitable for most women across the reproductive lifespan.

How Does Implanon Work?

The Implanon implant gradually releases progesterone into the bloodstream, effectively preventing pregnancy for up to three years. This contraceptive marvel achieves its goal by:

  • Inhibiting ovulation (the release of eggs from the ovaries).

  • Preventing thickening of cervical mucus, rendering it impenetrable to sperm.

  • Altering the uterine lining to create an inhospitable environment for pregnancy.

About the Implanon Procedure

The Implanon insertion procedure is a quick and simple process that can be completed in a matter of minutes. For optimal results, the implant should be inserted during the first three days of your menstrual cycle, provided that you are not pregnant. The tiny, flexible rod will be inserted into your upper arm using local anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.

When it comes to the lifespan of the Implanon, it should be removed or replaced after three years. However, if you have other reasons for wanting it removed earlier, this can be done using a gentle ‘pop out’ technique following a small incision made under local anaesthesia.

It is recommended that you discuss your birth control options with your doctor to determine the best possible solution for your personal situation.
